Queer Heroes Northwest 2017:
Sogene Mah
Asian Pacific Islander Lesbians and Gays was founded in 1992 to organize the broader Asian Pacific Islander community to battle Oregon’s anti-gay Ballot Measure 9.
Sogene Mah, who identifies as queer Hapa Chinese, was one of its earliest members. The organization has since changed its name to Asian Pacific Islander (API) Pride.
Sogene has maintained an active role in the organization throughout much of its 25-year history, and strives to maintain and foster a strong and connected queer API community in the Portland Metro area.
Throughout its existence, Sogene’s leadership has created a consistency and stability in API Pride that has been important in keeping the organization going.
We begin announcing a hero per day on June 1, and the heroes' posters are unveiled in a reception at Q Center on June 15, 2017, 5-7PM. The public is invited. Queer Heroes' posters are displayed all year at Q Center.
