Tanzania
- Statute: Section 154 to 157 of the Penal Code
criminalize homosexual acts between men, no mention of women.
- Penalty: 14 years
- Restrictions:
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous island off the east coast of Tanzania. It is predominantly
Islamic.
Under Zanzibar’s 1934 penal code, sodomy and “unnatural acts” were
offenses, but the government changed the law in 2004 to specifically deal
with homosexuality. The penalty for homosexual relations between men is 25 years’ jail, with a seven-year term for a lesbian relationship. The law sets a penalty of life imprisonment for a person found guilty
of sodomizing a minor.
