Somali Death Sentence Report Disputed

The Advocate, February 24–26, 2001

Officials in Somalia have denied reports that a female couple had been given a death sentence because they are lesbians, the BBC reports. Papers in Mogadishu had said that the women were found guilty of "exercising unnatural behavior" by having a sexual relationship. But police in Boosaaso, where the case purportedly took place, said that no such case came before the courts. One newspaper in Mogadishu has printed an apology to readers for the story.
