Saudi, 2 Yemenis Suffer Amputation

Associate Press, February 13, 2000

RIYADH, Saudi ArabiaAuthorities on Sunday chopped off the right hands and the left feet of a Saudi man and two Yemenis for robbery, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Abdul-Khair al-Garni, a Saudi national, and the Yemenis, Mamdouh Sufiani and Hassan, were found guilty of robbing a number of taxi drivers at knifepoint, said the statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.

Last month, a Saudi national had his right hand and left foot amputated for sodomy.

Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic law calls for cutting off the hands and feet of sodomizers and thieves.

Murderers, rapists, drug traffickers and armed robbers are beheaded.

Executions—there were at least 99 last year—and amputations are carried out with a sword in a public square.
