KUALA LUMPUR: Attorney-General Tan
Sri Gani Patail has dispelled notions that there was a deal to set Datuk Seri
Anwar Ibrahim free, saying that this proved that the judiciary was
independent.
“I can assure you that. At the same time I am glad not
because of the outcome but that the long procedure is finally over and has
come to an end,” he said.
He said the Federal Court, being the last appeal court,
had decided on the case.
He urged every one to respect the court’s decision and
not question it.
Gani said as far as the prosecution was concerned, they
had done their best.
To a question, he said the prosecution did not believe in
appealing the Federal’s Court decision.
“This is just another case we have lost and we will
have to carry on with the others and continue to give our best,” he said.
Meanwhile, Umno Youth chief Datuk Hishammuddin Tun
Hussein said Anwar’s acquittal is “nothing out of the ordinary” and
would not jeopardise the stability of Umno or its youth wing.
