Anwar Ibrahim Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison for Sodomy

Advocate, August 9, 2000

Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia’s former deputy prime minister, was sentenced to nine years in prison Monday on sodomy charges, EFE News Service reports. The sentence will be added to the six-year sentence he received in 1999 for abuse of power. Both Anwar and his adopted brother, Sukma Darnawan, were charged with having sexual relations with Anwar’s 19-year-old male chauffeur. Anwar maintained throughout his 100-day sodomy trial that the charges against him were politically motivated.
