Witness Says Police Forced Anwar Charges

The adopted brother of Anwar Ibrahim, former deputy premier of Malaysia, said Tuesday
that police pressured him into confessing that he had had sex with Anwar, Agence
France-Presse reports. Anwar is standing trial for sodomy charges, which he insists were
trumped up to embarrass him politically. At the trial Tuesday, Sukma Darmawan, who is on
trial with Anwar for sodomizing Anwar’s chauffeur, said he followed police
instructions in implicating Anwar in a sexual relationship. "I followed what was
required by police," Sukma said. "I gave the statement as the police promised me
that I would be freed the following day."
