Eight Detained in Raid of Gay Clubs in India

Eight people were detained in northern India after a swoop on two gay clubs
that had been operating under the guise of being AIDS counseling centers,
Reuters reports. The eight were charged with abetting sodomy, an illegal act
in India, and with criminal conspiracy. "Interrogations of the arrested
persons have revealed that there were at least three gay clubs operating under
similar garb, and together these are estimated to have a membership of at
least 500," said B.B. Bakshi, Lucknow district police chief. Pornographic
material was seized at the clubs, both of which were in the city of Lucknow.
