Egypt Jails Gay Youth - First Hand Report

Today, on Tuesday 18 September, the minor associated with the case of the
52 gay men (15-year-old boy) was sentenced to three years in prison for
practicing homosexuality. The court said he underwent a medical examination
that proved he had practiced anal sex. He was found guilty of homosexuality
and debauchery, and he will serve his sentence (the maximum penalty for
habitually practicing debauchery) in a prison for young offenders. The court
also said he will remain under police supervision for three years after his
release from jail.
The teen-ager, who was arrested May 11 along with 52 other males aboard a
Nile riverboat restaurant/discotheque in Cairo, screamed and sobbed as the
verdict was read. The court said it ordered the maximum penalty after the
youth confessed to practicing homosexuality and being a member of a gay
organization ignoring that the boy pleaded innocent and that he said that his
confessions were made under duress and torture during interrogation.
The trial of the 52 other defendants, which is being conducted in an
emergency state security court, is expected to resuming tomorrow Wednesday,
September 19, 2001. They have all pleaded not guilty.
