In Egypt fifty-two men were arrested because of their alleged sexual
orientation. They have been in detention for almost three months. Reports
indicate that they have been tortured and have undergone physical examinations
to determine whether they were sexually active with other men.
They have been charged with "obscene behavior between men." In
addition, two defendants face charges of "contempt of religion."
Call To Action!
Al-Fatiha (LGBTQ Muslims& Friends) has declared August 15, 2001 (the
first day of their trial) an International Day of Solidarity and Mourning in
support of the 52 men. Join thousands of people around the world as we protest
their detention.
Let your voices be heard! Flood the Egyptian embassies and consulates
around the world on August 15 with phone calls, letters, faxes, and emails
calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the 52 men.
On August 15th, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people around the
world will also hold demonstrations and rallies in front of Egyptian embassies
and consulates.
Join Al-Fatiha in expressing solidarity with our brothers in Egypt and
demanding that the Egyptian government uphold human rights standards as laid
out by international laws and international human rights treaties which Egypt
has signed.
