NT Age of Consent for Gays Lowered

ABC News (Australia), November 26, 2003

The Northern Territory Aids Council has welcomed a new law passed in parliament last night bringing the age of consent for homosexual males from 18 years to 16.

Two Country Liberal Party members crossed the floor to vote with the Territory Government after a parliamentary debate which lasted until 3.00am.

AIDS Council spokesman, Frank Farmer, says the new laws will not have any immediate effect on boys’ behaviour but will help them in the long term.

“What I’m hoping is that this would make it more easier for young gay men to access appropriate health services for example, or couselling services, or support services to talk about their sexuality, if that’s what they wish to do.”
