Hillsboro, MO—Police raided a Hillsboro, Missouri
video store on the weekend, arresting six men. Officers charged all six under
an anti-gay statute that even the prosecutor admits is seldom used.
"Deviate sexual intercourse with another person of the same sex"
is a misdemeanour under Missouri law.
Jefferson County prosecutor Bob Wilkins called the law "obscure,"
but he said he was using it to send a message about sex in a public place. He
also alleged that some of the men were prostitutes.
"It is not my intention to judge the conduct of consenting
adults," Wilkins told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
"This is not about throwing homosexuals in jail. This is about trying
to prevent future conduct," Wilkins said.
Those patrons who were arrested for having sex were in the pornographic
theatre area of the Award Video store.
