Re: “Pa. senator defended; Frist: Santorum not a homophobe,” April 24 news story.

I urge the editorial board of The Denver Post to quickly condemn the warped, hate-filled speech of Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and to support his removal from the Senate Republican leadership.

In a rambling interview with The Associated Press, Sen. Santorum likened homosexual acts to incest, bigamy and adultery. Santorum spoke in support of a Texas law banning homosexual sodomy that is currently under review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

According to Sen. Santorum, “If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual (gay) sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything.”

What we have the right to is equal protection of the law. In the United States, heterosexual adults aren’t jailed for engaging in private, consensual sexual activity (even if it is adulterous—although some states, like Georgia, actually outlaw heterosexual sodomy). Neither should we be.

While President Bush has refused to comment on Santorum’s remarks, he is quick to extol the blessings of democracy to undemocratic nations around the world. He instead must clean up the undemocratic mess in his own house. The president, Santorum and congressional Republicans must be told that in the United States, our government has no place in the bedrooms of its citizens. Some of our elected leaders apparently don’t know that freedom and equality begin at home.

Fine Distinctions

Dear Sen. Santorum: I love murderers but I hate their acts. I love Republicans and I simply abhor their acts. I hate female strippers—and I really adore their acts.
