Another day, another Republican leader spouts off. This time it’s Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., discussing a pending U.S. Supreme Court case regarding sodomy laws (“Gays ask GOP to replace Sen. Santorum,” April 22). Santorum equates homosexuality with bigamy, incest and adultery in trying to justify the existence of such laws. Such contorted reasoning belies the intellectual vacuum social conservatives find themselves in.

These laws, thankfully, have long since proved an embarrassment wherever they are found. They are hardly ever enforced, but their mere establishment, usually aimed specifically at gays and lesbians, are a potential source of unwarranted government power. Only 13 states still recognize them and the Supreme Court can finally put this beast to rest.
